ATU Local 843 is an association of workers organized to maintain our rights and improve our wages, hours and working conditions. ATU Local 843 is part of the Amalgamated Transit Union, AFL-CIO. ATU Local 843 represents most employees of Whatcom Transportation Authority. An executive board elected by our membership supervises and directs the management of the union.
Our association was established August 20, 1918. We have played a major role in providing the residents and visitors of Whatcom County with excellent transportation services ever since.
ATU 843 is affiliated with American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), Washington State Labor Council(WSLC), Northwest Washington Central Labor Council (NWWCLC), Northwest Conference of the ATU (ATU NWC), and the ATU Legislative Council (ATU LC). "...to place our occupation upon a higher plane of intelligence, efficiency and skill." ~ ATU Constitution
Effective labor unions are still by far the most powerful force in society for the protection of the laborer's rights and the improvement of his or her condition. No amount of employer benevolence, no diffusion of a sympathetic attitude on the part of the public, no increase of beneficial legislation, can adequately supply for the lack of organization among the workers themselves. ~ J.A. Ryan
